Japan’s Boy Band – KAT-TUN

Kat-tun, is the latest craze and idol in Japan for many young adults and teenagers.

Consisting of six fine looking men who flourished individually as well, they are ready to rock on Japan more now and in the future. Kat-tun is an all boy band, a product under the label of the famous male groups producer – Johnny Jimusho or Johnny’s and Associates. The members were around since they were all still around junior high school students and have been performing to other older generations of Johnny’s groups and singers like Kinki Kids and Koichi Doumoto.

Kat-tun History and Profile

They were first form in 2001 in Tokyo, Japan and were put on their first task performing as backup dancers for idol singer, Koichi Doumoto. The fans do not only love Koichi but this group of outstanding young talents as well, and Johnny’s isn’t some kind of low-rated entertainment company that will let a golden opportunity slip away. Thus, so happened the formation of Kat-tun, an all male dance and singing group.

In 2002, in response to many requests, KAT-TUN held their first concert, Okyakusama wa Kamisama -- Concert 55 man nin Ai no request ni Kotaete, which was later released on DVD. That same year, they performed 11 shows in a single day, which is a new record for the most performances within a day, furthermore, it was by a newbie group too. Therefore, it was quite an achievement.

Ever since then, their popularity seemed to escalate so well, that they are now one of the most popular band around in Japan. You can just ask any teenage girl on the street and perhaps none not knowing this particular boy-band. They have performed many times on popular music shows such as Music Station and Shounen Club. In 2005, KAT-TUN released their first major DVD, Live Kaizokuban, which topped the Oricon yearly chart for the best-selling DVD. They even have their own TV show now, called Cartoon Kattun, which received quite large number of audience every time it’s on air. While breaking Japanese sales records, the band put together a sophomore release in 2007, together with lots of variety shows and also the release of their 2008 ‘Queen of Pirates’ concert DVD.

Kat-tun Members:

Kazuya Kamenashi (born February 23, 1986)

Regardless of being the youngest in the band, Kamenashi is often seen as the frontman of Kat-tun. He’s probably the most dependable person and also the most popular among them. He is noted for his talent in baseball, having once represented Japan in a world tournament as a child though he had to give up dreams of playing professionally after joining Johnny’s. He’s also the main vocalist of Kat-tun, next to Akanishi and these two guys are very close too. Kamenashi also made debuts to many Japanese dramas, so yes, he’s very talented in both acting and singing, thus making him quite an asset to the Johnny’s.

Jin Akanishi (born July 4, 1984)

The second man of Kat-tun and also the ladies’ man. He went on hiatus from October 2006 to April 2007 to study English in Los Angeles just as KAT-TUN were six months into their debut. However, rumors has it says that it was because he and Kamenashi was too close to one another that they’re afraid of any weird rumors from surfacing. (Hint hint – Johnny’s typical issue) Akanishi plays the guitar and is a budding songwriter having written several songs for the group and himself. He had also acted in a few Japanese dramas but nearly not as many as Kamenashi.

Junnosuke Taguchi (born November 29, 1985)

The acrobat of Kat-tun, and also the one who had the most innocent and child-like smile among all Kat-tun members. Taguchi is known as the most light-hearted member with a carefree-like nature. Taguchi often getting picked on by the other members for his frequent use of dajare (Japanese word puns), he also has a tendency to randomly jump between topics during meetings and interviews. It seems like he had some trouble understanding situation sometimes. Hah! He’s been in few dramas as well like Ganbatte Ikimashoi!, Yukan Club and Hanayome to Papa.

Kouki Tanaka (November 5, 1985)

Tanaka is the rappist of Kat-tun, highly influenced by Hip hop and Reggae. Artistically inclined, Tanaka can illustrate well and designs his own apparel. With band mate Nakamaru, they make up a comedic unit, TaNaka (a portmanteau of their surnames), and perform skits together during concerts. Tanaka has also take a big hit in acting, been in few great dramas and a real good comedian. He had also been the love subject of Maria Ozawa, the infamous Japanese porn star, and this clear statement has been quite a shock and for his fans. Seriously, I think that kinda put a smear on the so called ‘boy-band’ image, but I guess things happen..all the time.

Tatsuya Ueda (October 4, 1983)

Quiet, sensitive and really soft spoken. Ueda plays the piano and guitar and is an able composer and lyricist, has written songs for the group and himself. Ueda is an avid boxer and has enough skill in the sport for him to be advised by professionals to get a professional boxing license. He doesn’t act as much as the others but he’s been on stage show with the rest of the members and Dream boys. The latest news has it that he managed to starred in the in his first drama role in a drama series called Konkatsu!, opposite senpai Masahiro Nakai (of SMAP) and popular actress, Aya Ueto.

Yuichi Nakamaru (born September 4, 1983)

Nakamaru is great at talking and hosting. He is the current MC of Shounen Club TV show. His main specialty is showcased in beat boxing and vocal percussion, and this ability is like the first and only among Johnny’s members. He said that he had learned by diligently studying hundreds of examples from hip-hop albums after KAT-TUN was formed. He is currently studying at Waseda University majoring in Environmental Studies. It seems like a lot of Japanese pop star been going to this university too…He is also a songwriter and the first member to do a solo stage show -- performing songs, dance, beat boxing and skits for two weeks in August 2008. Nakamura landed himself his first role in a drama called ‘Rescue’ alongside famous NEWS, Masuda Takahisa.

Kattun Trivia

• What Does Kat-tun means? Well does any of this rings the bell? Kamenashi – Akanishi – Taguchi – Tanaka – Ueda – Nakamaru …Yup! The answer lies in their names! They are the initials of each of the group members. So without one, there won’t be anymore Kat-tun?! Ouch!
• Last May, Kat-tun made another breaking record event when they performed on their latest concert for seven consecutive nights at Tokyo Dome. This longest streak has been made part of the Guiness Book of Records too.

Japanese Boyband – NEWS

Japanese entertainment scene is filled with many new faces, and some of them really made it out big. More and more rooms were made for these new faces to excel and prove themselves worthy of idol hood. But that doesn’t mean they are forgetting bands that have existed for so long. As a matter of fact, most big bands in Japan have their own loyal fans and concerts stands and sits were always full. They are practically already millionaires.


Boy bands are alive and kicking in Japan. NEWS is not entirely a new boy band face around. Bound under Johnny’s Entertainment They are indeed one of the most successful boy bands around in Japan and extremely famous among teenagers and young adults. Its name is an acronym for North(N), East(E), West(W) and South(S), simply because I think it consist of members not from the same districts and an implication that they are ready to ‘rule’ the whole of Japan with their music.
NEWS was formed in 2003 and originally consist of nine members but one member left in 2004 and later another 2 members were suspended from the group from controversy over underage drinking and now, NEWS continues with six members till today:-

Yamashita Tomohisa (Born on9th April 1985)
Yamashita Tomohisa or more popular with the name Yamapi in Japan among teenagers and young adult can be categorized as the most popular one in the group. Not only as a singer, but as a capable actor and model. He’s been in numerous hit Japanese dramas like Buzzer Beat, Kurosagi and Code Blue, in Japanese movies and commercials as well, making him one of the top artistes around.

Nishikido Ryo (Born on 3rd November 1984)
Probably the most hardworking member of NEWS. Nishikido Ryo is also a member of KANJANI8, another boy band from Johnny’s Entertainment. He’s also a highly potential actor. Originated from Osaka, Nishikido really enjoy good food and is also very popular among Japanese girls due to his cute character.
Keiichiro Koyama (Born on 1st May 1984)
The weekly Shounen Club show host, Keiichiro Koyama excels as a MC. He’s been in a few dramas, but not as many as other members except for Shigeaki Kato. Koyama’s family runs a Ramen restaurant in Tokyo which is often visited by his fans.

Takahisa Masuda (Born on 4th July 1986)
Takahisa Masuda has a great voice and is very skillful in dancing. He did a lot of acrobatic acts during NEWS concerts and currently has been doing a lot of solo acts. He’s been in few dramas as well and popular with his funny character.
Yuya Tegoshi (Born on 11th November 1987)
The youngest among all NEWS members and probably the cuddliest among all members. Yuya Tegoshi has a very nice and soothing voice which won him a lot of fans and compliments. He’s been very active acting and promoting some of his solo songs.

Shigeaki Kato (Born on 11th July 1987)
Shigeaki Kato is perhaps the least popular as individual but he’s got lot of fans as a NEWS member. So far, he’s only active as member of NEWS and hasn’t done much acting or anything on his own. He’s got a funny and blur character which makes him just as interesting as other members in the group.

NEWS Profile and History

Their first ever concert was NEWSnow Concert: NEWS’ Concert in 2004. They had even released a promotional single ‘NEWS Nippon’ which was used as the theme song for the World Cup of Volleyball Championships in Japan. NEWS has many singles which had top the Oricon, the radio hits chart in Japan. NEWS’s first album, Touch was sold more than 160 000 copies in the first week of its release in 2005.

In January 2006, NEWS was reduced to six members after Hironori Kusano and Hiroki Uchi was charge for underage drinking and consequently suspended indefinitely and even been demoted to trainees. On May 1, 2006, after NEWS finished their “NEWS Spring Tour“, the group went on hiatus for a while before making a comeback on December 30, 2006 after announcing that they would make their return at Johnny’s Concert Countdown 2006-2007 as a six-member group and has been very active until now.

Ever since then, they had produced a lot of number one hit singles on the Oricon chart and on November 7, NEWS simultaneously released their seventh single, “Weeeek” and their second album, Pacific. Both releases debut atop of their respective charts with “Weeeek” selling 263,000 copies in its first week and Pacific selling 196,000 copies in their first week. This marked the tenth in Oricon history that an artist had both their single and album debut atop the charts simultaneously. After that, they went on a nationwide tour – NEWS Concert Tour Pacific 2007-2008, from December 15, 2007 to January 27, 2008 and the concert was done at the Tokyo Dome for the first time. For Japanese artist, to be performing at Tokyo Dome meant a lot and its considered as a big accomplishment.

NEWS continued to release quite a number of singles and album and the recent one was ‘Sakura Girl’ which was released on March 2010.

Intuisi dan pengamatan bukan hal penting (sekunder). ESTJ: Adalah orang-orang ekstrover yang memilih berhadapan dengan realitas dengan mengambil keputusan berdasarkan rasio dan logika. Mendasarkan pilihan atau keputusannya pada data spesifik yang diperoleh lewat indra. ESFJ: Seperti ESTJ, tetapi menyukai aturan atau jadwal. Di lain pihak, keputusan yang diambil lebih didasarkan pada perasaan daripada pikiran. Materi yang diambil sebagai dasar keputusan adalah fakta, figur, serta gambaran detail. Pada dasarnya perasa, tetapi juga memiliki kepekaan indra sebagai kualitas sekunder (membantu dalam menghadapi realitas). Perasaan adalah yang utama bagi mereka. Kalau toh harus mengambil keputusan, hal itu dilakukan berdasarkan logika atau rasio. Bisa saja memperhatikan perasaan, tetapi sedikit memberikan penilaian. Biasanya mudah hanyut dalam arus, tetapi sulit mengubah keputusan yang sudah diambil. ESFP: Mirip ESFP, tetapi mengambil keputusan berdasarkan perasaan atau emosi. Biasa hidup apa adanya, tidak membutuhkan struktur atau organisasi. Menampung informasi lewat panca indra dan tidak melihat implikasi atau kemungkinan-kemungkinan dari apa yang diindra. ENFJ: Hangat, mudah didekati, tetapi membutuhkan ketegasan atau ketentuan, entah bagi diri sendiri ataupun orang lain. Tidak menaruh perhatian pada apa yang terjadi sekarang karena lebih tertarik pada konsekuensi dari apa yang sedang terjadi. Memandang ke masa yang akan datang berdasarkan nilai-nilai kemanusiaan. ENTJ: Menyukai rasio dan logika, sering tidak menyadari dampak dari keputusan yang diambil terhadap perasaan. Biasa bermimpi, melihat kemungkinan, dan meramalkan konsekuensi-konsekuensi. Di lain pihak, butuh aturan, jadwal, dan pengarahan. ENFP: Adalah penyair-penyair nyata: menjalani hidup tanpa mengharapkan yang bukan-bukan. There’s no doubt Yamada loves me. Everything he says has a "?" after it. Like “Yabu kun, what are you eating ?"or “what are you doing ?" But sorry, I have no interest in men. ….Just kidding! I love you Yamada (laughs)

He’s really independent but not like Dai chan’s, his independency isn’t annoying (laughs). For Yama chan, he would silently eat his lunch alone or sleep on his own. I can let off that because it doesn’t get other people involved. Compare him to Dai chan, he comes in late on meet ups and forget what others just said… oh wait it’s not about Dai chan (laughs).

?from Arioka?
Sucks at lying. I don’t know whether he wants to see my reaction but he sometimes tells me “____ sings the theme song” about an artist. When that’s a lie, his nostrils flares and smirks when he’s talking so I can tell his lying right away. He actually has a naive side and asks me “do you think I gained weight?” a lot but you don’t have to worry about that!

?from Takaki?
Yamada has a cute face but he says harsh things sometimes. He says “you’re such a kid” or “you’re so stupid” to me. But he would never say anything that would hurt others so maybe he knows when to stop. Ah, that reminds me what Keito said the other day. Apparently, Yamada’s sweat smells like roses? (laughs).

Lately, when our eyes meet during concerts he tries to make me laugh by putting a funny face. You try to make it like I started it first during the MC but Yama chan did it first! If you think my serious dancing face looks like a funny face then, that’s a really rude comment.

?from Nakajima?
Even if we’re the same age, I was the one first to join the agency you know. You used to follow me around saying “Yuto kun, Yuto kun” but not as much now. Yama chan, you’re cheating on me aren’t you. With Dai chan and Keito (laughs).

?from Chinen?
Yama chan isn’t a person who talks to everyone at school. It’s not like he’s not easy to be around or awkward person. He’s not that enthusiastic. But that Yama chan sometimes throws in stupid tasteless jokes and the people who accidently heard it laugh with their nose because they don’t know what to do… Yama chan shines when he’s with JUMP but I can’t stand to see him being the unfunny guy at school (laughs).

?from Keito?
It’s embarrassing to say this to his face but I sometimes think “where would I have been without Yama chan?” that’s how much Yama chan has helped me. He points out “Keito should do this more that way” or “that one was great” and other things so I can honestly feel that I’m improving a little. I really appreciate that.

Stop kicking the soccer ball prop at me during break time! Also, stop trying to trip me when I’m walking! What he does is really immature. You’re in 2nd year of high school now, please act more mature? (laughs) But I think it’s amazing that you can tell when I’m hiding something and you would try to figure it out. Thanks to that, I’m a little scared that you know my secrets (laughs).

?Yamada’s reply?
I thought everyone would say more criticism about me but there’s none of those. What’s wrong everyone? And What’s wrong Keito!? Saying sweet things like “without Yama chan…” will make me go mad for god sakes!! (laughs) To Ryutaro, the only person to say something bad about me, it sounds too cute. (Staffs tells him “Ah, but Ryutaro said “you haven’t grown an inch, are you all right?” at the end quietly) Hey! That’s the most hurtful realistic criticism (laughs).
